AHC: Indian soccer

The Indian Premier League (a professional 20 / 20 cricket league) in India has dramatically altered the professional cricket landscape, with the allure of big money on offer for a short season.

My question is what changes would be needed to make to either the Indian Super League or I - League have the same impact on association football (soccer) as the IPL has had in cricket?

Hmmm avoiding 20 / 20 would be good from the perspective of a cricket purist. The question becomes how to make football more popular so that it attracts the large corporate dollars on offer in the sub continent?

This would do bad things for Cricket as a sport, because India is one of only ten full members of the ICC, and by far the biggest (in terms of population). Realistically, I think this would make soccer the biggest team sport in the world, bar none.

But it would give good teams such as Ireland and Afghanistan the chance to play tests. The cricket system is too closed, and far too biased in favour of the current ten test playing nations. The others need to be given more opportunities to compete at a higher level.
