AHC: India is divided along lingustic lines instead of religious ones

What would need to happen for the Indian subcontinent to be divided along boundaries having to do with language rather than the religions of Hinduism and Islam?

You would need the Indians to adopt a more European mentality on religion, language, and nationalism. Even if this happens and results in a united and independent Punjab and Bengal though, religious lines and lingustic lines will coincide in many other places.

Maybe if the british organized the region along that line and governed the states separatly - maybe even fostering some bad blood among them on the vein of "divide and conquer"?

I think an important question is what happens to Pashtunistan? Does it get Anschlussed by Afghanistan? And how do the Iranians feel about an independent Balochistan?

Do you mean a state for every language, or fewer and bigger states based on broader linguistic groupings? Say, and Indo-Aryan country and a Dravidian country.

From indus to hoogli many dynasties ruled over an empire united administratively, economically and culturally
