They did in the North-West Frontier for generations (the Pakistanis are essentially fighting the same insurgency still).

The real problem with such an insurgency is that if you take it beyond the provincial level or spotty uprisings like 1857 the British will lose rapidly - India is vast in both size and manpower compared to Algeria or Indochina.

Ireland is probably a better candidate for Britain's Algeria and Malaysia for Britain's Indochina. The Irish War of Independence and the Malaysian Emergency could arguably be counted as insurgencies.

A crucial difference is that home rule, in both cases, was a policy already in place.
