AHC: Independent POTUS after 1950

Was it plausible? If so, I'd be interested to read that. But I would prefer a solution that doesn't involve Perot, as he's a bit obvious.

Eisenhower does not run for the Republican nomination in 1952. This results in Robert Taft winning the nomination. Taft's isolationism results in Eisenhower deciding to run as an independent. Meanwhile, Truman somehow pulls out a victory in the 1952 Democratic Convention. In the general election, Eisenhower, popular and perceived as a centrist, beats out the horribly unpopular Truman and the reactionary Taft.
