AHC: Independent Philippines during Napoleonic Wars

It's the Philippines bandwagon and I'm jumping in.

During the Napoleonic Wars Spain was invaded by Napoleon in what was called the Peninsular War. During this time there was a level of chaos in its vast array of colonies, from Cuba to Latin America to...the Philippines.

By the end of the war there was enough impetus for successful independence movements across Latin America, but the OTL efforts in the Philippines were unsuccessful.

The AHC is as follows: the Philippines should become independent not even after the Napoleonic Wars like much of Latin America but before its end. POD is the beginning of the French Revolution.

Both questions and comments welcome. :D

This might border ASB.

The enlightenment ideas from Europe didn't reach the Philippines until after the Napoleonic Wars. The rebellions before that timeframe was more about the independence of particular regions, not as a nationwide movement. As the above post said, Count Luís Varela was one of the first intellectuals who created the concept of Filipino nationhood.

Another factor is that the Philippines has been the backwater of the Spanish Empire. It was as administered similar to that of a feudal fief, compared to Latin America which is run like an overseas province.

Possibly the sudden influx of Philippine PODs tonight.

Also, what you said + the building of the Suez Canal which made it easier to smuggle in unwanted ideas in the form of disgruntled exiles.

Wasn't there something about the Filipino clergy being the leading opposition towards how the Philippines was ruled for a time? Rebellions, of whatever cause, can be the source of a successful independence of a country if it's done well, even if there exists no central reason to lead to it. Although a terrible example, the Tonghak rebels of Korea could've successfully ousted the government, provided the king never requests Chinese assistance; I'm thinking that if the 'fiefdom' that the Philippines was ruled worse TTL or a major portion of the military had to be pulled back to Spain, a rebellion can be a possible cause for independence.

Is it possible for the Philippines to be used as a penal colony? That could be another good source for rebellion; I'm just throwing out ideas at this point.

There's a larger-than-normal number of threads on the Philippines, which usually attracts larger number of people to post on those topics. It's good strategy to post a thread on such a topic during the time.
