AHC: independent Mormon State

They can't anywhere near OTL (not enough Mormons, and too close to stronger powers).

Maybe Mormon missionaries have great success in one of the Polynesian kingdoms, eventually converting the kingdom and becoming a haven for Mormons elsewhere? The native monarch is eventually deposed (much like in Hawaii) and the Mormon Church begins to rule directly.

Santa Ana dies at or around the time of the Alamo. California is still Mexican when gold is found there, they permits the Mormons to have a satellite state with the southern border as the Colorado and San Juan Rivers so long as they do not interfere with Mexican affairs and support Mexico City in most of its international policies. With the French Invasion of 1862 the State of Deseret consolidates and remains friendly to Mexico but also finds its own way, taking northernmost California in exchange for helping the Juarez government with material support.

The revelation that the Mormons were practicing polygamy more or less ruined their early missionary efforts. Remove that aspect and they're still going to head West, due to the fact that they pissed everyone off by being a really disruptive group every time they settled down. But they'd be able to make it to Utah and still be boosting their numbers drastically, though I'd question how much further they could really go with that generation's missionary work.

Doesn't solve all the problems with the AHC, but it does help with the primary issue of population.

The US would surround the Mormon state and would never let them be independent. They'd have to migrate elsewhere, perhaps next to the Canadian border or the Mexican one.
