AHC: Independent Macedonia

Inspired by reading about the Macedonian Question and its effects on the Balkans, what would be the easiest way for an independent Macedonia to be created before the Cold War? I suspect this would need a pre-1900 POD which is why I put this here.

There were a few occasions where the Great Powers discussed creating such a “free” nation but were ultimately pre-empted by the Balkan Wars. Perhaps it could be formed if a Great Power coalition had invaded the Ottomans in the late 19th century, as opposed to just Russia in the 1878 war?

Yeah, whoops, I meant what we’d call Slavic Macedonia. It would be ethnically mixed if it were created using the entirety of “Macedonia,” though.

Maybe if the Ottomans had supported Slavio-Macedonian nationalists when they retreated from the region. This could be motivated by wanting to snub Greece or just to make sure that neighbours of Turkey remain smaller, weaker and divided. If something like this happened then it could be applyed to Albanians and Aromanians too.

There certainly were people who thought uniting all the parts of Macedonia was a good idea. It would probably consist of the majority/entirety of the Monastir and Salonika vilayets, plus the Uskub sanjak from Kosovo vilayet (using late 19th century Ottoman borders).

This would likely accompany or be the result of a total collapse of the Ottoman Empire, and probably to keep some semblance of a balance of power in the Balkans. Albania (which would also be created ahead of schedule since Albania would otherwise be an exclave of the Ottoman Empire), Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece would all have claims on Macedonia. Not a recipe for regional stability in the long run, and the new state of Macedonia would have serious internal tensions and probably winds up getting partitioned between its neighbours.
