On 11 July 1960 the province of Katanga from the Republic of the Congo initiating the Congo Crisis. The crisis effectively ended in 1963 when UN troops overran the final Katanganese outpost of Kolwezi.

My question is what POD would be required for Katanga to successfully secede from the Republic of Congo?

Patrice Lumumba manages to avoid getting removed from power and the powers that be keep supporting Katanga. His army was pretty infamous at the time for atrocities so maybe you can even get UN peacekeepers in Katanga!
