AHC: Independent Finland

Your challenge: Have an independent state form in the early middle ages covering roughly the area of modern Finland, and having Finnish (or something recognizably similar) as its dominant culture. It can be either Catholic or Orthodox (or something else-but I can't see how you could pull that off without venturing into ASB-land)

Furthermore, this state must maintain its national independence until at least the early modern era, and preferably up till the present.

Go!

It is very difficult get some kind of state of Finland on early Middle Ages. Biggest problems are that there was very small population and there wasn't much things what could unite Finnish people. They even didn't speak common language. Dialects of Finnish wasn't very well understandable with each others.

Maybe you could take Novgorod in some fashion, I remember someone mentioning that in another thread.

A surviving, successful Kvenland? This cannot be. We do not speak of the Kven. Fornljots line must stay buried. No more giant-kings.
