In OTL's WW2, the human cost of WW2 was relatively low for the USA in comparison to all of the other major players in the conflict; the death toll of WW2 for the USA, as a share of its 1939 population, was only 0.32%. So, here's the challenge- increase the proportionate death toll of the USA during WW2, to be at least on a par with that of OTL's United Kingdom (which had a death toll equating to 0.94% of its 1939 population). In other words, increase the USA's death toll during WW2, from its figure of 419,400 IOTL, to 1,231,700 people or more (or, if you want to use an earlier POD and make The Philippines part of the USA during the war ITTL, increase its combined death toll from 946,400 people to more than 1,382,100 people- though later points of divergence will be granted more merit, due to the greater difficulty of the challenge). What divergences would need to happen for the USA lose this many people in WW2? Would mounting an invasion of the Japanese home islands be enough in itself? Or would the opening up of an American theater of WW2 have been required for the USA to suffer a death toll in this range?
