AHC: Iberia divided north-south

With a POD after 1000 AD, make the Iberian peninsula divided between two major polities, one in the north, the other in the south. Bonus points if the southern one is a successor to Al-Andalus.

Hmm, well the issue here is that in the west, there is little to block N-S expansion. In fact, even Kings of Asturias in the 800s IIRC raided into the Merida area.

This would mean three states not two, but how infeasible/unstable is a situation with the following:

1) Portugal to the Tejo.

2) South Iberia (Al-Andalus) to the Tagus and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sistema_Iberico

3) North Iberia ("Greater Galicia"?) as the result of mashing together (the OTL way, or close enough) the Christian kingdoms north of there.

?

It seems like the closest you can get to a north-south divide to me, but I'm sure I'm missing something.

The best way to achive this is probably to keep a strong Muslim state in the South. Once Al-Andalus collapsed, the North-South division of Iberia disappeared bit by bit thanks to the Reconquista. If there is a strong Muslim state in the South that survives the Reconquista, then you would have the Southern state.

As for a united Christian Kingdom in the North, it's pretty easy: dynastic union between the states. That's how Spain formed OTL and it nearly gobbled up Portugal in the process.
