How possible was it for the Democrats to put forward a Hubert Humphrey/Scoop Jackson Presidential ticket and would 1976 have been the best year for it?

That he was.
He'd only be able to serve about a year of his term if for some reason he ran and won.
I think having Scoop in office would be good for the Democrsts in the 77-81 term.
Scoop Jackson was a War Hawk and would have foamed at the mouth over the Iranian Revolution.
Assuming the war (because there is a good chance there would have been one) even goes moderately well, Scoop could probably win in 1980 (which is the last time Reagan could reasonably run, butterflying his Conservative Revolution).
Iran definitely had the potential to be a mix of Vietnam and Iraq, a lot kids could end up being drafted to fight in a war where we don't really seem to have that clear of a goal after the initial invasion.
If we invade for the hostages, we get them or they die. Situation is resolved one way or the other in a matter of months.
The Iranian Army itself would of held out for longer, but it wouldn't have been able to overcome the US.
Also, assuming all this happens, expect several military blunders early on. The US armed forces were in bad shape in the latter half of the 1970s.
If you think Ronald Reagan being controversial among modern left-leaning people, Scoop would be magnitudes more. A true liberal at heart who met globally opposition to the US with force.
