AHC: Holy Roman Empire forms from West Francia

955 - After several tactical blunders, the army of the Germans is slaughtered near Augsburg by the victorious Magyars. King Otto I (who is also Duke of Saxony) is killed, as are Duke Burchard III of Swabia, Duke Henry of Bavaria, Duke Boleslaw of Bohemia and Conrad the Red, former Duke of Lotharingia and
The Magyars continue their great raid to the west and plunder South Germany before crossing the Rhine into Lotharingia. Theyr forces are weakened by the army held in reserve by the late kings brother, Archbishop Brono of Cologne, the Duke of Lotharingia. The magyars still manage to cross in West Francia while planning to return to the Pannonian plains via Burgundy and Northern Italy.

Wll, now I have hit a roadblock. The dominant Duke of Frankia, Hugh the Great, is too old and too near his OTL death to beat the Magyars, the king Lothair as well as Hugh's son, Hugh Capet, are both too young, being just thirteen or fourteen. Basically I thought of Bruno of Lotharingia getting cozy with West Francia, a West Francian strongman beating the Magyars and later defeating Berengar II of Italy. Meanwhile the four East Francian Kingdom has no strong dukes and no king, it fractures under constant pressure from the Magyars and the duchies drift away from each other: Bavaria under a series of Luitpolding dukes is annually plundered, Swabia with rulers of the Burcharding line is heavily influenced by West Francia, in Franconia exist a permanent feud between the Salians on the Rhine and the Popponiods in the east, in Saxony the new ducal line of the Billungers is concentrating on expansion into the Wendish lands and the Baltic area.
non of them is remotely powerful enough to challenge Western dominance.

So meanwhile, a strong West Francian/French+Burgundian+Italian king (either a butterfly-begotten Carolingian or a Robertin/*Capetian) can convince the Pope to crown him Roman Emperor.

You should make a timeline out of this!

This IMHO would be an interesting TL. Even if the defeat of 955 would be less severe, so Otto would still be killed, but have some of the dukes survive.

Another option could be an earlier PoD, like jlk7e's suggestion.
