AHC: Holy Roman Emperor Philip I of Spain

So Emperor Charles V made his brother Ferdinand heir to the Holy Roman Empire but regretted it and tried to reach an agreement which would allow his son Philip to eventually become Emperor. It obviously fell threw. So your challenge, should you chose to accept it, is to get Philip II on the Imperial Throne, without taking the easy way out and just killing off Ferdinand I.

Just killing Ferdinand I being the easy way out, really depends on the date, since Ferdinand and Anna had a large family, 15 Children (4 sons) with 13 (3 sons) of them reaching adulthood.

Furthermore the 'experiment' with Charles V often absent didn't please the imperial princes, especially given the difficulties the HRE was facing.

IMHO a more plausible emperor Philip I, would be a surviving Philip the Handsome (Fair), who as Philip I was king of Castille.

There had already been a Holy Roman emperor Philip I (1198-1208). Philip son of Charles V would (conveniently) be numbered Philip II.

Philip I of Hohenstaufen, never achieved the imperial coronation by the Pope, so he only was king of the Romans.

Fair enough, but the lists of emperors usually give a number to the German emperors who weren't crowned by the pope (including Conrad I, Henry I, Rudolf I and all emperors after Charles V). Admittedly the pope crowned a rival claimant, but Philip was clearly winning the civil war and was the candidate of the incumbent dynasty.

Philip, son of Charles V, could decide for himself whether he chose to recognize Philip of Swabia, but numbering him as Philip II is convenient since it's the same number as he's known by for his Spanish crown.
