I've seen some threads speculating on the effects of a potential execution of Hirohito. I thought about something a bit different after reading of Pu Yi's treatment.
Emperor Pu Yi was the last Qing emperor. After WW2 he was held in Fushun War Criminals Management Center by the Communist Chinese, who managed to "reeducate" him and get him to confess his failings and crimes while professing support for communism. Seems like just the thing a Japanese emperor needs.
1. What PODs could lead to Hirohito being handed over to the Chinese?
2. If "1" occurs, can they "break" Hirohito? How will it affect the prestige of the Imperial family in Japan and their memory of WW2? How does this affect Chinese-Japanese relations during the cold war to the modern day?
I imagine the sight of the emperor admitting to his crimes and guilt while spouting communist propaganda would put a damper on OTL's tendency towards downplaying WW2 crimes. Even thought the Japanese would not really believe the things Hirohito said, it would still be an extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing sight.
