AHC: Have WWIII break out in Japan

We've all seen books and stories where WWIII breaks out between the Soviet Union and the US/UK in Germany, but how about in Japan? suppose the atomic bomb fails or is delayed, making an invasion necessary. Could WWIII break out over the Home Islands?

It would still be World War II.

Japan would eventually fall, but it would either be:

A: EXTREMELY bloody if the Allies are dumb enough to attempt a home invasion.
B: The Japanese were thinking about surrender by that point. A couple more months of blockade would possibly end the war.

No, the WW III scenario in Germany is two huge armies meeting on reasonably even terms. Both the Soviets and the Western allies have massive forces and established supply lines. The same would not be true of Japan. Even if the Soviets did end up committing large numbers to the Japanese invasion, their supply lines would be untenable. The US Pacific Fleet, was impossible for any at the time to face and could immediately cut off any supply and reinforcement to Soviet troops in Japan.

Perhaps a land grab then? Suppose the Soviet Union decides to invade after a US blockade. Would the US risk WWIII by counter invading, or would they let Japan become communist?

At 2:17 PM on December 6th, 1992, a new type of bomb exploded over the metropolitan area of Japan:

Nine hours later, World War III began.

Leningrad, Moscow, Kazakhstan, Irkutsk, Vladivostok, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, New York, Okinawa, Berlin, Hamburg, Warsaw, London, Birmingham, Paris, New Delhi...

And the world began to rebuild.
