The 1960s saw the rise of a large and influential communist movement. Groups that were either explicitly communist (The Black Panthers, Young Lords) or heavily influenced by communism (Students for A Democratic Society) had millions of members combined. However, these organizations and parties had either fallen apart, taken to adventurist terrorism or become brutal circular firing squads. This was partially due to the effects of state repression and the retreat of the mass struggles that had carectorized the 1960s. My question is, how do you have the New Left create a communist party with a mass base that could maintain itself past the wave of struggle that birthed it?

Rules:

1. A mass base means that the party must at least half a million members, and be a part of life for sections of the population beyond its membership. Part of life means that it is more than just a political organization, it provides services and social activities to its members. The German Social Democratic Party is a good model, it wasn't just a political party. The Working Class of Germany belonged to Social Democratic unions, Socialist beer clubs and children played in Socialist Marching Bands. Combine this with the Serve the People programs of the Panthers and there allies. They fed children, ran health clinics and dealt with community problems.

2. The POD cannot make the sixties unrecognizable, and it must be after 1940
