AHC: Have the Conservative Democrats in control of the Democratic Party

Which conservatives have to be dominant in the party - Northern conservatives (along the lines of John W. Davis) or Southern conservatives (along the lines of the Dixiecrats)? There is a big difference.

Personal favorite of mine is to have Wallace get dumped as the VP in 44 and instead having that post go to Paul V. McNutt, Prentice Cooper, Harry Bryd or James F. Byrnes. In 1948 its going to be the Progressive breakaway that wins states while the Dixiecrats remain loyal in the party ranks. Reversing that trend means that the Southern Faction is going to actually retain its power out of the Senate for decades to come, while men like HHH and other Liberals are on the outs and pretty much bound to get eaten and absorbed into the Rockefeller Republicans.

Another 1948 Solution that pushes a similar line though I'm not sure if the Progressives win states in it, is to have James V. Forrestal hold it together like he did 1945-early 1948 a bit longer, have him take the Democratic Nomination as a compromise Anti-Truman candidate, as he framed himself and win or lose, the Left in the Democratic Party is going to take a real beating from him.

Not really, Davis was for practical purposes a Dixiecrat.

I picked him as an example because he was one of the most prominent Democrats of the 1920s to oppose the KKK at the height of their power in the party - publicly and forcefully denouncing them, and fought against grandfathered voter rolls. There might be better people to serve as examples (I'm partway through a book on the 1924 election so I had him on my mind), but my general point still stands.
