AHC: Have Russia occupy Alaska and the EU dissolve in the next ten years

I had a dream yesterday in which Russia was at war with the USA and was occupying Alaska with 200,000 troops. They were just falling back due to American air supremacy and aerial bombardments (not sure if they were orbital, that's a bit dizzy). In the dream, I got the impression that Russia was led by that presidential candidate who's ultra-nationalistic and does indeed advocate the war against the US. I think he's Liberal Democract or something along those lines, but I could be wrong.

Meanwhile, in Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel officially dissolved the European Union in a speech broadcasted live all over the world. It caught my attention that Merkel had enough authority to do it alone, as neither Sarkozy nor Cameron were present. Europe doesn't seem to be able to fight Russia, so NATO didn't join the war at all. No nukes had been used until now.

I considered posting this in ASB and Future History, sorry if this is the wrong forum. Now, fellow members of AH.com, I challenge you to make my dream real! :)

Definitely ASB as Putin is NOT completely insane and the Russians have about as much chance of occupying Alaska as I have swimming from Seattle to Sydney!

-economy goes boom, causing a lack of everything in highly import dependant countries
-lack of goods sparks riots and small scale civil wars, which turn large scale
-20 years later, the new us civil war is still going on with no faction willing to give up
-inflow of war emigrants into alaska leads to a supply crisis
-canda refuses to help, they've got enough problems already, keeping the soughern border secured
-russia, having reverted to a mostly agrarian society, offers help
-to better coordinate humanitarian efforts some russian units get shipped to alaska with heavy armored support to guard it against US warlords, looking hungrily at alaskas oil

only slightly ASB - we do know that civil wars exist.

A de facto collapse of the EU (no politician is going to be caught dead using the term "collapse") is not that far-fetched, though it won't be Merkel's doing alone ;)

An occupation of Alaska isn't happening short of a shooting war, and (as noted) even Putin isn't that crazy. As for the EU, well, wait ten years. Dissolution may not be alternate history at all by then.

I don't think Russia has the logistical infrastructure to move that many troops such a long distance any longer.

I don't know about that. Alaska is in Russia's backyard - Palin could see Siberia from her house. If Russia wanted to, I'm sure they could land some troops. You don't even need ships I don't think - you can use large helicopters to carry troops and equipment, paradrops of soldiers and armour, etc.

The Russian military's premier units are stationed way out west, iirc. The second-line equipment and troops in the Russian Far East are not what they'd be wanting to launch an invasion with. So to move all the units currently kept in the west to staging points in the east would be a big logistical undertaking that wouldn't go unnoticed.

I heard that Russian Federation has some good equipment on the Chinese border. Moving those units north to Siberia would be easier than moving equipment from the west. Even moving units from the west wouldn't be impossible (though you are right it would be noticed)

What about an earlier PoD? Maybe the US winds up on the side of the Central Powers in WWI, and the Russians take Alaska back. Then, I dunno, the Germans (who won WWI ittl) try to found a European Union, which collapses on itself with the collapse of Austria-Hungary.
