AHC: Have Relations Between England and Japan Continue Uninterrupted from 1600 to 1854

In 1600 William Adams, later known as Miura Anjin, ended up in Japan and opened the door to relations between the country of his birth and the one he'd spend the rest of his life in. In OTL however they didn't amount to much and came an abrupt end following the Amboyna massacre in 1623, with the English closing their commercial base at Hirado Island without notifying Japan. An attempt to reopen relations was attempted in 1673 but was rebuffed by the Japanese who'd gone isolationist four years earlier and had taken exception to the English bailing without informing them in 1623. Neither country had anything to do with the other until the Nagasaki Harbour Incident in 1808. The first treaty between the two countries was signed in 1854.

Would it have been possible for the two century period of not having anything to do with each other to have been avoided, with relations continuing uninterrupted from William Adams to when the first treaty was signed in OTL and hopefully beyond? Bonus points if relations are friendly(ish) (I suspect that this may involve/require mutual dislike of a third country).

Portugal or Spain then. England plays on Japanese fears of colonization and a Catholic fifth column. IOTL this led to prosecution of Japanese Christians and foreign missionaries. Perhaps careful English actions lead to Japan being willing to trade with Protestants freely, provided no missionary activity takes place?

Hmm. Spain would probably be the better choice of mutual enemy; the alliance between England and Portugal was already over two hundred years old when William Adams arrived in Japan and, going by how long said alliance has lasted, mutual animosity towards Spain is apparently the foundation of a lasting relationship.

The Dutch might also work given the Amboyna massacre;

The Amboyna massacre[1] was the 1623 torture and execution on Ambon Island (present-day Maluku, Indonesia) of twenty men, including ten of whom were in the service of the English East India Company, and Japanese and Portuguese traders, by agents of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), on accusations of treason.

Maybe if the Dutch did something to further aggravate the Japanese during the aftermath and the English stuck around and capitalised on it rather than bailing like they did in OTL. *shrugs*

Or it could be both.
