AHC: Have Japan be split into 2 countries while Germany remains one, after WW2.

Have World War 2 begin, the Axis lose, but the fates of Germany and Japan are reversed. Germany either becomes a capitalist or communist puppet state in full, while Japan is split into a capitalist half and a communist half. No point of divergence before 1939.

Hitler dies early—very early—and the resulting chaos in Germany leads to a rapid, anticlimactic conclusion to the war. Over time, the dysfunction that is Nazi Germany devolves into a puppet state of one side or the other.

On the other hand, Japan does its OTL thing of attacking colonial possessions in SE Asia and Britain, France, and maybe the Netherlands gang up and smack them back hard. Russia joins in during the third act and seizes Hokkaido.

You'd need something that slows down the Soviets, but doesn't cripple them, so that the Iron Curtain comes down somewhere either on Germany's eastern border, wherever it ends up in this tl, or beyond it. You'd also need to either slow down the Manhattan Project or have Japan fight on even when bombs are being thrown.

Hitler places Erich von Manstein and Heinz Guderian in charge of the Eastern Front.

FDR lives and accepts the plan to partition Japan between the US and UK Occupied South and USSR Occupied North.

Could also do the inverse: speed up the Soviets, by having them screw up less in response to Barbarossa or the Germans screw up worse, so they overrun all of Germany with enough time to spare to participate in a landing against Japan.

Who are those guys? Weren’t they already on the Eastern front?

Who are...?!?

Seriously though, the two were on the Eastern Front but weren't in overall command. Could they have pushed the German effort further eastward? That is definitely an argument waiting to happen.

I’m sorry, I am not a WW2 history buff. It is not like Manstein is a household name.

No worries. I didn't mean to come across as rude.

Guderian and Manstein were two of the best tank commanders of the war, thinking outside the box and, at times, disobeying orders to accomplish objectives. In Russia that could pay dividends or push them so far beyond their supply lines they could endanger the entire effort (and with the spaces in the East that was a very possible outcome).

This actually the more likely sort of scenario.
