AHC: Have a popularly elected mexican government petition the US for annexation

The petition must happen between the years 1900 and 2012. No part of your timeline can include an apocalypse or collapse of civilization. POD can be anytime after the end of the Mexican-American war, although of course the later your POD, the more impressive.

History as a whole can get as crazy as you want, but in the context of your proposal, it must be internally sensible for the majority of Mexico's government and people to approve of the move. No rules-lawyering! (e.g., having a tiny state calling itself mexico petitioning for annexation.)

Bonus round: Have the United States be in a position where it wants to accept.

Step 1: literal Nazi conquest of South America...

A Nazi invasion of the americas would definitely raise America's image, but with the OTL WW2 alliances Germany can't even control the mediterranean, much less cross the Pacific. Though maybe a WW2 sparked by a fascist Guatamala-into-USCA, with Britain on Hitler's side could result in something interesting...

Could a possible POD be pre-1900? I could picture an ATL in which there’s a more expansionist USA under the Democrats from Polk on and in which much of Northern Mexico gets annexed after an ATL Mexican American War, eventually leading to an even worse capacity for Mexico to govern itself and the potential for total annexation by the 1910s?

Actually, now that I re-read my post, I notice that I never actually specified a date for the POD, only the petition. So I'll say the POD can be anytime after the Mexican-American war concludes.

(this is a ninja-edit of the original post; originally I said that this was the post-1900 forum. This gives a bit more leeway, but still guarantees a Mexican national identity to muck things up.)

Still rather ASB. When it was early enough to still be possible, the USA was very racist and would not have let it happen.
