AHC: Have a European power settling Australia before 1600

Can not-Brits even into Australia?

The challenge is simple! Have a European power settling Australia before 1600. No conditions, it can be anyway (it could technically even be the Ottomans but that's probably ASB). Be creative! Knock yourselves out!

(I actually am interested if this is even mildly plausible)

Well, if a proper Hellenic Empire would have survived after Alexander the Great, and this Empire manages to expand through the Red Sea shores (Egypt, Hejaz, Ethiopia etc. until Yemen), being strong enough to avoid the Roman conquest, it is remotely possible that at some later point they could engage in a further exploration of the Indian Ocean that could lead in an eventual settlement in West Australia.

The Portuguese were in Timor from 1516 so probably knew that northern Australia was there soon after. I once read that one of Francis Drake objective in his circumnavigation in 1572 was to find the rumored southern continent known as 'beach', .

However even the USA wasn't colonised for almost a century after its discovery and it's much closer and more inviting. So there is a big jump from discovery to colonization that makes the challenge very difficult.

Yeah, Australia doesn't have the obvious economic impetus for colonization that, for example, the Spice Islands do....

However, what if Australia is settled as a base for pirates/privateers to raid the Spice trade from??
