AHC: Have a Dole/Kemp Ticket Win in 1996

It's kind of stretching the definition of "Left-Winger", but you could have Bill Casey run to the Right of Clinton social issues and the the left on economics.

I believe Casey was considering a run until he had health issues. he was a pro-life Democrat but maybe could have played spoiler in Penn and the Midwest costing Clinton a couple of states? Maybe have him run with Jesse Jackson somehow and draw a significant enough percent of the African American vote as well. Jackson was pro-life early before he changed his mind and he was highly skeptical of the triangulation/3rd way approach before reaching some type of understanding with the Clintons....
The POD is probably too late, but with more time such an independent/3rd party run could have disrupted things. Not sure if Casey was anti-nafta, but throw that in and have Perot back them and maybe they could cost Clinton the election

Who would a good 90's left winger?

Howard Dean and Bernie Sanders were already around in 1996: Dean had just been elected to a second term as Governor of Vermont, and Sanders was chair of the House Progressive Caucus. But neither of them had much of a national stature. Ralph Nader was a household name with good connections, but would need a big push to get him to run a serious primary challenge against Clinton. Maybe Paul Wellstone?

I think Ralph Nader deciding to in 1996(possibly Clinton has corruption issues that are worse than OTL or the Dems do even worse in 1994) would be interesting.

In the interest of a more realistic challenge, I am moving the POD to the publishing of the Contract with America on September 27th, 1994.

Probably not enough to win, but have Bob Dole display is dry and delightful sense of humor during the campaign. He came off as such a dour and even bitter old man and then after he became a private citizen he showed that he had a great sense of humor.

With the earlier POD, the best way is a 3rd party from the left which draws away enough support to cost Clinton several states.

Perot really only cared about NAFTA so someone like Jerry Brown leaving the democrats and going to the Reform party which opposed NAFTA could work. Perot doesn't enter and allows Brown to lead the party and pull it left on the issues he doesn't care about. Brown talked about running with Jesse Jackson as his VP in the 92 primaries which cost him NY and pretty much locked up the nomination for Clinton.

If they could keep the 7% Perot got and up it, a Brown-Jackson ticket running anti Nafta could potentially sap enough votes in the big blue states from Clinton to cost him the election.
