AHC: Green Politics Dominant

Green Politics have become more sucessful in recent times, just recently electing a Green as President of Austria and for a time, forming the German government. What would be required for Green Politics to become more dominant, contesting and winning elections as government leaders, or at least major opposition parties (like major third parties)?. Barring future developments, of course.

(I believe I posted a thread about this, but I don't want to necro.)

Define Green Politics. Arguably the fact that pretty much every political party today has some form of environmental policy, and pretty much everyone is, in principle at least, an environmentalist, would seem to indicate that Green Politics is already very successful.

Having enviromentalism, social justice, grassroots democracy and pacificism as their core tenets, and distinguish themselves from other parties. So just a Socialist/Liberal/Conservative party with an enviromental platform would not fit the criteria, unless it became the core platform or near it.

No chance for them winning in Poland. Unleas they become some semi consevrative party.
If the original 1990s Greens weren't so caught up in in-fighting and if their TV advertising didn't suck so much, they might've won a few seats in 1991. Considering how fragmented the Sejm was back then and how difficult it was to form coalitions, it wouldn't be a stretch to see them end up in government in the 1991-93 period. But I don't know if they could potentially survive beyond that period, and if they do they certainly won't be winning any elections.

Well if you move POD enough back, even Poland can go Green. I would see a place for them on political scene after breakup of the left in early 2000's, Had the SLD (post communist) died and ceased to associate "social justice" and other leftish agenda, with party owned luxury cars and other corruption, the polish left would have pretty wide support. Why green? Because it would be good move to change program when making a new political party, to differ and be distinctive? Perhaps if they present real alternative for Civic Platform (center) in 2011?

I would see them with PSL (agrarian party) and UP (pretty far left) as coalition.

That was actually attempted and it didn't work out very well. Like I said in my previous post, I think you need a POD in the 1990s to make any Polish Green Party viable - have the original Greens make it into the Sejm in 1991, and maybe make a play for the "anti-clerical and pro-choice middle-class" vote SLD and UP ended up dividing amongst themselves in 1993.

The porblem is that most ideas of Green party in Poland just don't have enough votes. Since most of theyr ideas will hit a lot of people.

Like green energy. Poland has a really really powerful coal lobby. And miners are known from being fond to go on Warsaw.

A Green Party could break through if they emphasised social liberalism and anti-clericalism. There's always been a constituency for that - think UP or Palikot. But it's a very, very long shot, and much like UP and Palikot they would probably only last for one term.

Sure it didn't worked out well... It is the first time I ever heard about them... And they exist for 12 years. Shoudn't politcians be more open about their entry to politics? Like informing somebody except their families and friends?

Farmers are strong lobby as well. And in Poland we have potentialy about 1 to 2,5 GW in form of small hydropower. This would benefit not just everybody who like cheap elecricity, but also farmers who would have enough water for irigation and reduced risk of flooding.

They only ever run on the SLD's lists because they couldn't even register in all the constituencies on their own. They're not exactly great at politics.

Well "Razem" has managed to start from scratch, without support of any bigger party, they didn't make it to Sejm, but they got enough votes to get public financing. Everybody talks about them. They are popular now. It doesn't mean that they would have instant success in next elections, but surely looks promising. Moreover their political program is pretty green except pacifism - they think Poland should keep its share in NATO.
