AHC: Godzilla 1985, American style:

In the 1980s there was a proposal to do Godzilla in 3D in an American film that's basically Godzilla: This Time it's Gorgo. Assuming that this film gets made, how would fandom react to a movie that like the Japanese version includes a lot of Cold War emphasis (but the Soviet is a bad guy in the actual script instead of politically-motivated editing), but includes some potential crowing special effects of awesome that never were? If the film were made, who would be the likely actors who'd star in it? Would this film have inaugurated an American Godzilla franchise or would it have simply been seen in the same fashion as the 1998 film but earlier?

^This is the proposed film in question.

It was exactly those sorts of writing directions that made Toho yank its approval in the first place. Basically to make it work, you'd need a rather more right-wing management in charge at Toho, except that such a management would be rather less willing to deal with an American studio for filming in the first place, and even then, it would break the original premise of the franchise to smithereens.
