I did this image a few months ago as a joke and looking just now, it got me wondering: what would it take for nazi germany and western powers to ally together against russia ?

People other than Hitler and Stalin in charge of their respective countries? Get someone far more concerned about exporting the revolution by force, regardless of the risks, in control of the USSR, and a more traditional conservative nationalist in Germany, perhaps?

sorry, have ammended the OP, meant germany *as it was* post 1933.

Hitler was a man whose word couldn't be trusted on the international scene since Munich and the annexation of Czechslovakia. Of course Churchill was consistently awake to the dangers of Nazism since the early 30s, so I think it would be difficult to have him in that photo (although he was under no illusions about Stalin either so I suppose its possible).

Hitler did seem to entertain a romantic notion about a British-German alliance, someone might be able to correct me here but I think it was because he viewed the English people as of teutonic origins?

But really, the best POD to achieve your aim would occur, in my opinion, in Russia. Have 'socialism in one country' never be promoted as government policy and the soviets look at aggresively exporting their revolution overseas and it may be enough to unite Germany and the west into action. One would think such a war would be successful for a Western-Germanic alliance, but I could only shiver at what the post war world would look like. It's going to be a very bitter pill to swallow when reports of genocide in Russia by Nazi troops start surfacing in the west. Although there were several instances suppressed in our world of Russian atrocities, the sheer scale of the German atrocities would quite rightly terrify their western allies. In such a scenario WW3 is probably very likely around the corner, unless the west can develop the atomic bomb quickly enough.

Hitler was completely unreliable and untrustworthy to the west after breaking the Munich agreement - which in turn means that he was reliable and trustworthy before breaking Munich. Both the UK and France wanted peace at all costs, though that mostly meant "no war with Germany". The USSR was another thing.

A Soviet aggression before a Nazi one just might do the trick - most of Russia's neighbours already had interlocking alliances with each other in case of war with the soviets, and additional guarantees/treaties coming from France. Assuming Stalin dies and is replaced by someone else, or he himself does something stupid, in either wat leading to a confrontation with some other country, things could actually very quickly come to a pan-european alliance against the USSR. Say, Russia decides to invade Estonia, small, irrelevant country far away from Paris and London. But Estonia has a treaty with Latvia which it invokes causing Latvia to at least mobilize. In turn, Latvia has a treaty with Poland, causing a chain reaction and Polish mobilization. This provokes Stalin into declaring war on both Latvia and Poland as well. Hitler triumphs - communism has just shown its true face, he offers to save Europe from communism, and with the Baltic States and Poland bleeding, realizing they can't keep the war going, begin to agree to accept German aid. London and Paris are too hesitant about allowing Stalin or Hitler to take central Europe for themselves and decide to join up at least in part - just to be present at any negotiations table there will be after the war, ensuring that the Germans go home after the war. Thus the BFG alliance is formed.
