AHC: German Hispaniola

Exactly what it says :D With a POD no earlier than the Reformation, have either Germany control the OTL Isle of Hispaniola by ITL 1914 or have German language & culture be the dominant forms on the island by ITL 2010.

Pshaw. You need a colonial-minded guy in charge way earlier - Spain, the UK and the US would have too much influence in the region for Germany to end up with Hispaniola in the 19th century. Besides, Bismarck was not colonial-minded at all!

Maybe more colonial-minded Prussian monarchs force the Spanish and French to sell their halves of the island to Prussia in the 18th century? Maybe UK occupies Hispaniola in 18th century, and Prussia gains it in the peace negotiations? It's a start towards the German language aspect, at least.

Hhmm, well that gives us a window from 1517 when it started to kick off and 1828 when the US announced the Monroe Doctrine and the British enforced it to work with.

Off the top of my head one of the German nations either receives or invades and takes over Haiti after they declare their independence, or they take over the Dominican Republic after they declare independence, and when the other declares independence they fabricate a border incident and annex them as well. Fast forward to 1871 and when the German Empire is announced Hispaniola becomes a German colony. Which is then promptly lost to the US as a League of Nations mandate post Great War.

Another option is that the one of the German nations takes a page out of the Duchy or Courland's book who made a go at establishing colonies in the Americas and Africa on a number of occasions and decide to have a go themselves. Maybe after Spanish interest has moved to the South American mainland and they started neglecting the island they make them an offer to buy what would become Haiti which is still Spanish pre-Treaty of Ryswick? They later on pick up the Dominican Republic and it all gets folded into the German Empire later on.

One risk: the French could conceivably win in the Caribbean in 1870-1871; I wouldn't be shocked if Bismarck (if in charge of Prussia at the time) lets it go.

How about a 19th century TL in which Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen accepts the offer of the Spanish throne? This leads to a stronger Spain and very close ties with Germany.

Fast forward to an alt-Spanish American war and Spain+ Germany kicks some US butt and make the Caribbean less of a US playground. In the aftermath German bankers take advantage of the economic turmoil on Hispaniola to establish themselves prominently in the economy (They did this in OTL Haiti prompting the US to intervene). Both Haiti and the Dominican Republic become defacto German economic colonies.

A series of revolts against German economic hegemony leads to a German military reprisal that places the island under military occupation. Due to some savvier alliances on Germany's part WWI is postphoned and the Island remains under German occupation for some time.
