AHC: Genovese Colonial Empire

How would Genoa be able to have a colonial empire OUTSIDE the Mediterranean? Would they need to become independent earlier? Sack Venice? Keep the lands they conquered and explored(Pisa, the Canaries, etc.)?

As long as Genoa has some colonies, I'd be a happy man.

Really hard to do without access through the Gibraltar straits at minimum. However, with basing and passage rights from Castille (possibly in exchange for a share of revenue or other concessions), they might be able to set up colonies in Morocco and West Africa, maybe further with ocean-going vessels.

This pic from Wikipedia shows the extent their trade network IOTL.

Maybe if Genoa somehow keeps Spain disunited via having Andalusia become Christian instead of annexed?

Or they help in the reconquista (for papal influence as you do) and take Gibraltar and Tangiers?
