AHC: Gallic Empire Survives

What, exactly is the Gallic Empire?

In OTL, to the best of my knowledge, Haul was a loose confederation of tribes and city-states, which occasionally united under a High King (whose role was largely ceremonial, most likely).

If you want to create a stronger Gaulish state, you are likely going to have to find a way for Vercingtorix to defeat Caesar, and do it in such a way as to not freak out the Roman government. Southern Gaul, already under Roman Rule, will remain that way for the time being (any efforts to separate Italia from Hispania will result in the unwanted Roman freak-out)

If he's able to pull it off, Vercingtorix might be able to unite Gaul into the semblance of a Kingdom. If he has an equally, or possibly more-or, capable son, then we might be looking at a regional rival to Roman.

The Gallic Empire refers to a breakaway realm of the Roman Empire that only existed for about 14 years, from 260 to 274 CE. Throughout those years the Gallic Empire was wracked by a serious degree of infighting between rival generals. Although the first Gallic Emperor, Postumus, was able to fend off such challenges during the first half of its existence, his death and the succession of no less than 5 usurpers/emperors from 268-274, sealed it's fate.

Now to change the situation and let the Gallic Empire survive, you would need Postumus to survive. Easy way, and I don't know how accurate it is since I'm borrowing from Wikipedia, have his allow his soldiers to sack Mogontiacum. Apparently his refusal to allow this was what led to his death in 268.

Doh! I feel rather foolish now.

You also need to find a way to stop the Romans of Gaul wanting to, y'know, conquer Rome and the whole Empire. That's the difficult thing, IMO.

That is quite difficult, however, given the circumstances, I don't think it's all that hard. IIRC it was Alexander Severus who subdued the Gallic Empire (and the Palmyerene) and all but ended the Crisis of the Third Century. Now what it takes is to prevent his rise and make it so that the Empire weakens even further with civil wars and rival emperors popping up, and is no longer able to subdue the Gallic Empire and has to accept existence with it side-by-side with it. Perhaps even a rebellious General, in Africa or anywhere else, could found his own breakaway Empire to rival Rome (though I don't think there were enough Legions in Africa to rebel against the Empire).
