AHC: Franklin's Albany Plan Realized

In 1754, delegates at the Albany Congress, which met to patch relations with the Iroqouis tribes, drafted a proposal of an American Union. Benjamin Franklin, the brains behind the plan, would later write that opposition from the colonial governments and the Board of Trade ultimately led to the plan going down in flames.

How could this have been avoided?

I think if Prince Frederick, a long time Whig ally, had not died before he could inherit the throne from George II, we could have seen greater autonomy, if not union, for the American colonies.

Not sure why, given that the likes of Pitt are arguing in favor of strong British control - wiser, perhaps, but not less of it than his opponents.

I don't think anyone in Britain wants to give the colonies autonomy - the whole problem is that the colonies have been left to their own devices and now Britain wants them to actually pay some of the taxes.

I'm sure we could see some circumstances in which Britain would accept autonomy of some sort in exchange for something, but I don't see any in which the colonies get more than pre-1765 without actually accepting giving something in return.
