AHC: France Retains Algeria

Hey lads, another AHC for you (that may have already been done, but regardless).

Is there a way for France to hold onto Algeria and retain it as a part of Metropolitan France?

Give citizenship and rights to native locals, especially Berbers and promote a synchranist Franco-Berber identity in the locals in preparation for eventual full frenchification. Highest priority is to reduce influence of Islamic religion/Arabic language, which not only go hand in hand, but are opposed to western values. On the other hand, Berber culture should be much more easily reconciled with Christian Europe, as they too were once Christian and part of the greater Mediterranean European sphere.

Basically, the French might find it difficult to get rid of their demographic disadvantage in terms of "white french" presence, but if non-arabized Berbers are deemed "white enough" it could tip the scales in favor of continued French dominance and eventual full integration.

This would have to start as soon as the French show up in the 1870's and the shift should be in full swing before the 1940's/1950's to prevent the popular success of the arab nationalist movements that sprang up by the 60's.

Get the American to support the Fourth and Fifth Republic . It's due to diplomatic presure that Algeria became independant . After that, the Harkis will likely obtain the French Nationality and the demographic disadvantage will slowly dissapears

So, basically, you're saying that the Algerian Berbers need to be Gallicized just like the Algerian Jews were? If so, that could work if it is combined with the butterflying-away of both World Wars; after all, no World Wars probably means that much more Southern European settlers move to and settle in Algeria.

I think without the wars it'll be even more difficult to convince mainland Europeans to migrate, because people would rather stay where the standard of living is higher. Either the government wastes a lot of money incentivising settlement, which could anger the locals, or Algeria is uplifted to equal standards with the metropole.

With a much greater standard of living, the locals will have much less reason to rebel, even if they aren't Gallicized. So I don't think it's necessary to Gallicize. What's most important is development, secularization, and de-Arabization.

Like I said, Berber culture is potentially much more compatible with Westernization than Arabic culture. Even if they can't be made French, they can be European enough.
