AHC: Four Way Presidential Debate

Good scenario, though OTL the Watergate break-in itself didn't occur until June of 1972, so if by "break" you mean "be broken by the media", there won't be anything to break in early '71. If you mean some other wrongdoing by Nixon gets exposed in '71, that could be plausible, but I don't know if anything would capture the public imagination quite like a break-in.

If it somehow got revealed that Nixon stalled Vietnam in '68, that could have some serious ramifications. A break-in and cover-up is one thing, but actual treason is another.

Now that would be quite a divergence. I believe it'd be the first time since 1865 that the President and VP are from a different party.

What would be interesting is if Lieberman plays a big role in the formation of the Cabinet. Perhaps he talks W out of invading Iraq, at least right away, and instead focuses on weeding out al-Qaeda and reforming Afghanistan.

That would be...divisive to say the least. And if Reagan and Wallace beat the treason drum, the ‘72 election will be more like a melee.

Not only did Lieberman support the war, but as recently as 2015 he maintained that the world is better place because of it.

Well shit. Well there has to be some appreciable way that Lieberman instead of Cheney would make a difference. Maybe he coaxes W into bringing someone in who, y’know, actually has a plan for postwar Iraq rather than whatever they did OTL.

Also, W has a big decision in ‘04 regarding Lieberman on the ticket. Cheney won’t have the same regard TTL unless he ends up being super-important in the Cabinet. So does W keep Lieberman or go with someone else, and does it cost him the election?
