AHC: Four Slavs

So, somewhat simple, your challenge to have the Slavic people be split (generally) into the four groups shown in the attatched map, rather than the present three.

*I'm not sure exactly when the present definition was made definitive, so if it needs a Pre-1900 PoD I'll ask it be moved their.

perhaps posting a picture of the ethnicities in Europe prior to WW2 ended with massive ethnic relocations?

That's would'nt really achieve the aim of the thread, that'd just make things more confusing by having the existing three dispersed everywhere, thus Southern Slavs in North Europe, Eastern Slavs in South-West Europe etc.

It requiers a PoD in the late 18th early 19th century for the south Slavs not to start calling themselves south Slavs, because they were the southmost of the bunch.

Another thing that needs to be understood is that south, west and east Slavs are basicaly just linguistic denominations created in the 19th century.

A different division based on the mentality and culture could have happened.

Slovenians, Czechs, Moravians, Silesians could be western aka germanic Slavs
Croats, Bosnian and Slovakians could be middle/central aka hungaric Slavs
Serbs, Montenegrins, Macedonians and Bulgarians could be souther aka turkic Slavs
Poles, Belorussians, Ukrainians and Russians could be easter aka slavic Slavs

The greatest obstacle is to prevent south Slavs starting to call themselves south Slavs due to their geography. And the first that used that denomination were Croats and Slovenians.

Now that this is moved to pre-1900, it gets a bit simpler. What's the easiest way to split the Bulgarians from the rest of the South Slavs?

The easier way is to butterfly the Avar Khaganate.

The Avars managed to "create" slavic peoples by including them into their domination, and structuring them by having sort of "slavic marches".

Have the Avars collapse during VI century, and you'll likely butterfly the Balkanic Serbs (having sort of mix between Greek Slavs and Albanians instead). Once the ATL-Croats and ATL-Slovenic peoples are even more tied to west there, you'll have the separation you're searching.
