AHC: Florida as another Maine

Here's the challenge: Have Florida (the majority, at least), at some point, be part of another US state (preferably SC). Only rules are that it has to be recognized and actually enforced (so, not just a claim). And that, the US needs to be generally recognizable, as do the states in general.

I feel it may be nigh-implausible, as it was always a distinct colony with two hundred years of Spanish rule, then twenty as a distinct and independent English colony, then thirty more as Spanish. The concept of Florida as its own thing is pretty well ingrained.

How about if (East) Florida wins independence from Spain as part of a Cuba-based republic, which is admitted to the US as a single state and later partitioned?

East Florida is incorporated as a state including West Florida, Eventually, the state is partitioned.
