AHC: First Lady in the White House Twice

We have the concept of other Grover Cleveland style non-consecutive terms for alternate presidents. However, I do not think there has been a discussion on a non-consecutive term for a First Lady. And it very clearly involves the concept of said First Lady being married to two different presidents in her lifetime upon their entry into the White House, or some other oddities in terms of divorce, marriage and potential remarriage. So your challenge is to have the First Lady serve twice, or more.

Perhaps a widower president names his relative or in-law as First Lady, and later on, said relative/in-law's spouse wins? Not married to both but should still count

One sort of example that comes to mind is Theresa Heinz Kerry. Married to two very influential senators, one of whom was a nominee for president and the other likely could have been if not for his death. I think it's possible that a widowed First Lady could remarry an influential senator or Washington figure who then makes his own bid for the White House. I think it'd be harder for the First Lady to divorce the president then marry another man who becomes president.

The first person that comes to my mind is Teresa Heinz Kerry, who was married to Republican Senator John Heinz until his death in a plane crash and later remarried to John Kerry.

Heinz had a decent enough shot at the presidency from 1980 onward, but the best bet would probably be to have Reagan choose him as his running mate and ascend to the presidency in 1988 before losing in 1992.

Now, in order for Teresa to marry Kerry, Heinz would most likely have to pass away at some point; perhaps, like Bush, he's the target of a 1993 assassination attempt in Kuwait, or dies in some other incident either during his presidency or afterwards? After that, it's not unreasonable for her and Kerry to still strike up a relationship (presumably they still would've met through Washington social events), and it's not unreasonable for Kerry to become President anytime afterwards.

Edit: ninja'd!

The widowed Frances Cleveland, instead of marrying Thomas J. Preston, Jr. in 1913, marries the widowed Woodrow Wilson in 1915... (Admittedly, this is a stretch, since Grover and Woodrow did not get along too well in Princeton...)

I could see Jackie Kennedy doing it. Aristotle Onassis would never be president since he was a foreign citizen. Another potential husband could have. The only problem is that Jackie Kennedy was completely traumatized by the assassination, and was further traumatized by the murder of Robert Kennedy, and spent her life very protective of herself and her children because she was afraid they would die. Her entire marriage to Onassis has been theorized to be merely a matter of convenience, as she and her children would be shielded from danger with Onassis. So a marriage to another would be president may be completely out of possibility. She may threaten to divorce, or very well could divorce, such a person. And anyone with that ambition would likely be off her list of suitors to begin with.

When in doubt, the thread is about America.

OK, next time I will write something like "There *is* one non-US--and therefore not strictly on-topic but related and possibly interesting--case of a woman being married to two different presidents." I thought it would be understood that this was what I meant, but evidently I was wrong..

Perhaps Stephen Douglas does not die from typhoid fever in 1861 and is Lincoln's vice president when he's assasinated and later marries a lonely Mary Todd Lincoln?
