AHC: Fascist Canada

Rules:

1. The Fascist Party (What ever you name it) must come to power before WWII.
2. It must include both English and French Canadians.
3. It must be a "home grown" movement.
4. It does not have to be a racist movement.
5. Please make it as "Canadian" as possible, avoid Nazi/Italian/British symbols.
6. You should try to keep it in the Commonwealth, but leaving is fine too.
7. Please tell us how this Canada is effected by and what role it plays in WWII.

Maurice Duplessis decides to enter federal politics as leader of the National Union Party (Union Nationale) during the 1930s.

This would be the closest you can get. I don't think the US would be especially happy with Canada going Fascist and neither would Britain, meaning that beyond the Union Nationale, which still encouraged foreign investment in Quebec, while maintaining socially conservative ideals, a fascist Canada is next to impossible.

That would not be fascism - if he radicalise, it would be like Franco's and Salazar's catholicism based moral integrim and rigid state.

The condition 2 is hard - a fascist canada may bash well on francos (and natives) as targets, due to history. OR the francos somehow take power with such a Francoism ideology, and it's kinda ASB.

I do have an idea for what is effectively a Fascist Canada. It uses a 'Central Powers win WWI' POD and deals with the otherwise inevitable American and British disapproval by going with a Fascist Anglosphere. (Britain is still lead by Churchill, but he is a dark reflection of the OTL one. The United States is outright Nazi, with 1920s KKK leader D. C. Stephenson as president.)

Communist France, Imperial Germany and Tsarist Russia would be the 'good guys' (such as there are...) in the tale, while Japan acts as OTL in China (with the approval of the US and the complicity of the opportunistic Russians) and the world is consumed by a second Great War...

I posted this idea in another thread, in the form of a list of Prime Ministers of Canada, and later presidents of the United States (and successor nations) in the ATL...

Having a fascist Canada is nearly impossible in OTL unless there was a fascist Britain for Canada to follow.

Therefore, I agree with RCAF Brat with a Central Powers win, and the British Empires defeat in WW1. Even though Canada was trying to become autonomous during the 20's and 30's, they were still apart of the Commonwealth and would follow their lead.

There is a slight chance with a worse Great Depression in Canada during the 30's to have the fascist's party get some seats, but you need circumstances similar to the European countries which adopted fascism (i.e Italy and Germany) for Canada to become fascist itself.

Well one additional problem for any fascist in Canada is that the demographics is roughly 50/50 Francophone-Anglophone concentrated in two different regions (the eastern seaboard is mixed but less populous). If any sort of fascist comes around bashing anglos/francos your more likely to see two separate nations instead of one single nation, no reason Quebec would stick around.

Additionally natives don't make good scapegoats, they live away from major population centers ,their numbers are quite low, they quite poor, and they're rarely in competition for resources. Although crime, alcoholism, poverty, & all that bad stuff is on average statistically higher for reserve natives. (especially after residential schools)

Also you would kill Canada's economic prospects. Canada's growth was and still is fueled by immigrants, sure you may still get franco/anglo immigrants but the massive Asian/European growth Post WWI & WWII won't occur. Canada would be a backwater, some of its resources may not even be developed.

To be honest, a Communist Canada would be much more interesting to see.

We're communists by Republican standards.

I wish they would realise it - we are NOT frenches. We french-canadians are NOT some 'hyphenated canadians' (and now Québecois here) but a distinct culture, as old as 'yankees' and 'canucks'.

Minor pet peeve at the use of 'the french's culture' there.

But worse. There is NO FREAKING WAY A QUEBIE, EVEN A FAR RIGHT FOOL LIKE DUPLESSIS HAVE A CHANCE TO RULE CANADA. SPECIALLY NOT AS SOME DICTATOR.

This was the time of anglo power all the way, and my ancestors where discretely pushed to assimilate, abide, 'speak white!' and all that.
