AHC: European Powers Take Influence in Barbary States Pre-1800

Your challenge is to get a European power to take influence of at least one of the Barbary States away from the Ottoman power and into its sphere of influence. Bonus points of Egypt.

Hmm. WI Jan Janszoon had been convinced by the pleas of his family and the Dutch authorities to cease embarking on his own pirate adventures, and had settled down in his new role as the President-for-Life in the Republic of Salé, which he himself established? Could this then become an integral overseas territory of the Dutch- perhaps even becoming a fully-fledged overseas United Province of the Dutch Republic in time? IMHO, it's probably the likeliest starting point.

Barely under the wire:

My New Albion TL has the the Franco-Spanish Armada of 1779 being somewhat successful in the invasion of Britain; Spain gets Gibraltar and Minorca, and the British navy is knocked down a peg or two for the next while, especially in the Med. (The French Revolution is also butterflied away).

Without having to fear the Corsairs playing off Christian rivalries, the French and Spanish, joined by Naples and Sicily, (and finally even ships from Sweden and Denmark) attack and take Sale, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli 1786-1789.

Since the Ottomans are at this time engaged in an [OTL] war with Russia and Austria, the French lead an attack on the Ottoman fleet in the Eastern Med, but it ends up as a minor clash

(A side effect is the popularity of stage shows all over Europe featuring young women claiming to have been freed from the lustful Arab. Usually starting with a primly-dressed young schoolgirl or bride-to-be who defies her parents to seek adventure/join her future husband, it proceeds through her capture at sea, being stripped (suitably discreetly) and put on the auction block with her wailing companions; her display in more and more diaphanous “Arab” costumes, being forced to perform erotic “Oriental” dances for her master; her resistance to his advances, a nicely sadistic interlude in the dungeons with whips and chains, followed by…a veil drawn over her Fate Worse Than Death- then on to the rescue (by Danes or Swedes in the British versions), and her restoration, covered in shame, to her parents (or a convent in Catholic countries.) After an evening of titillation, a suitably moral climax follows, with the young woman, now modestly dressed, hanging her head in shame and giving a lecture to other young women about the dangers of disobedience to parental authority. The women involved are usually actresses/prostitutes who have been no closer to the Barbary Coast than their audiences; a sideline employment is provided for some Black Loyalists in Britain in playing the part of cruel African eunuchs.)

Well England under Elizabeth I entered into the Anglo-Moroccan Alliance with Ahmad al-Mansur mainly against their common enemy Spain, the Barbary Company was also created to help foster trade between the two. During their conflicts with Spain the English help provide support that sees the Moroccans beat the Spanish and successfully reclaim territory such as Ceuta, continued good relations have trade also continue to improve. The relationship waxes and wanes over time based on the internal situation and foreign relations of the two countries, eventually however they start to pick up again during the Alaouite dynasty with British influence heading off the war with Spain and assisting with the centralising and modernising of the state. Anglo-Moroccan relations remain good with Morocco having trade with all the European powers and maintaining their independence however it generally being unofficially seen as being in Britain's sphere of influence. How's that? It's roughly what I was considering for an independent Morocco timeline, along with a few other things such as avoiding the invasion of the Songhai Empire or at least making it a smash and grab operation with no attempt to stay and govern the region.
