AHC: European population over 1.5 billion.

A lot of the modern ideas of immigration arent so much truisms earlier in history.
The regions surrounding the Steppes suffered regular depopulations followed by mass immigration from multiple peoples repopulating those areas. Urgench went from being sacked for instance to being noted for just how populous it was (untill Timur of course). The resistence to immigration and absorption of immigrant populations is a side effect of nationalism, which may be averted given the right POD.

Welcoming in migrants to repopulate an area is a little different though - here, were are talking about a Europe that is already very crowded (much more than OTL) so I'm doubtful that mass immigration would be welcomed.

...I am a little confused, what is making europe more crowded prior to the POD?

And how much, pray tell, would women and the environment suffer for the sake of a mega-population?
Seriously, demographics have consequences far beyond body count.

With the right p.o.d. (which would be pretty far back), it wouldn't be a case of women suffering, but I agree with you on the environment, Europe's environment would be pretty similar to north/northeast China.

Far enough back perhaps, but when I read these speculations, there generally is an indifference what would be the social and health effects on the people really responsible. And not to consider the major downsides of having massive populations on the environment, does feel surprisingly naive given what we know in the 21st century.

Agreed. I usually ask population questions in asb for that very reason.

It would almost certainly have to be in order to reach 1,5B now. But regardless, you are talking about a huge number of immigrants moving to a land that already has a huge population. It's hard to find a plausible reason for that.

My confusion is aimed at how OTL can have a greater population than itself prior to the POD making it an atl...
