AHC: European forces launch a major ground invasion of the US by mid-century

I mean... why?

Nazis or Soviets are the two obvious ones, but even then it's a long shot. Ever tried to invade a continent protected by two oceans? You'd need some B-movie level biological warfare to crack the US that way.

Not particularly "US vs. Europe"-style war based, but I think a Great Depression that goes worse and leads to the US imploding into civil war can spur different countries supporting different sides, i.e. USSR supporting Communists and etc.

Yes I'm not thinking OTL US being invaded but a country that's perhaps become totalitarian and unstable.

Yeah, in OTL an invasion from Europe (including a Soviet one) borders on ASB after WW1, and probably after 1900. Well, at least not one that doesn't involve the US somehow unilaterally functionally destroyed by WMDs first. Think "Sea Mammal Mammal Mammal." Hard to imagine anyone having enough sealift and the ability to protect it adequately. Providence has truly smiled upon the US by giving it friendly neighbors on both land borders.

Ouch. Some truth to that. But I was referring to the time period in question. And we had rather epic fails in every attempt beat Canada into submission...

That has just never seemed to go well for us, somehow.

You'd need an Anglo-Kaiserreich with Brest-Litvosk AND a Japanese ally AND a 2nd Civil War in the US to get this done mid-century. Moreover, to have any chance of success, it'd have to be an America stuck under an unpopular coup.

Maybe Europe goes commie by 1940 with Rosa leading a red Germany and Trotsky a red Russia a fully United Bolsheviki Europe would have the industrial power and political will I think to pull off a "final glorious war of liberation agains the last imperialist power."

Perhaps they're going against a pseudo-fascist isolationist US led by Charles Lindbergh.
