AHC: Dystopic 2000s

Inspired by the "Dystopic 1990s" thread, and the new TL by Vultan, "You Get What You Give":

What would be a course of action that would make the 2000s a very, very dystopic century? This is a tougher challenge, since this is the last full decade we've lived through and we don't know the consequences of everything that has come about. However, I suppose the same is true of the 1990s still.:p

But I digress. Knowing what we know today, what series of events would make the 2000s a very dystopic decade all the way around?

MY USUAL WARNING: Like usual, I'm not wishing for any of this to have happened. Just trying to see what there is to see in AH, even if that means dystopia.

Flight 93 hits the Capitol Building on Sept. 11th, 2001. There's a helluva start.

American invasion of Pakistan? Renewed civil war in the Sudan? organized armed struggle (and subsequent crackdown) in Xinjiang and Tibet? Pro-Iran militia's take over Iraq?

The PATRIOT act. You can make it as lawful evil as you want and it will still get passed. It could include provisions for a Death Star and it'd still get passed.

Have a debt ceiling debacle in the late 2000s, started by Democrat Barack Obama (should you choose to elect him, since he ran against Alan Keyes) that turns into one worse than the 2011 debt debacle. That'll make the market crash even worse, and blamed on both parties.

More successful terrorism after 9/11 is the Hollywood way out, but a worse 9/11 is a possibility as well.

I see what you did there. :p

I heard that back in 2010 Al-Qaeda were planning a major attack on a European capital along the lines of the Mumbai Attacks in 2008. I think that the most likely targets were London, Paris and Berlin. I suppose we could have it staged say between 2004-2008 to fit the thread specification.
