AHC: Dystopic 1980's

Here's the PoD -- Reagan decides against making Bush his running mate, and picks someone else. When Reagan wins and is shot by Hinckley, he dies.

Now the challenge -- to make the 1980's as chaotic and bleak as possible, and picking the (Republican) President who oversees it.

Why not choose Lyndon La Rouche, the man behind the postrs of Barack Obama with the Hitler mustache...?

Except didn't LaRouche run as a Democrat?

Who could Reagan or the Republican delegates pick who would be bad? Perhaps whose biggest fault is being easily led on and puppetized...

Ive some good news and some bad news

Reagan was viewed as the most Dystopic candidate on the right wing. I personally find it hard to find to many people to the right of Reagan. However a very scary choice would be either Jessie Helms or Pat Robertson. I cant think of anny reason why regan would need to shore up his support among the far right wing.

However, Another interesting is that Bush doesn't run in 80 and Anderson takes over the mantle as the "moderate" candidate. So Anderson is chosen as vp, Reagan beates Carter, and is assassinated in 81 by Hinkney. Bang!!! and now you have a president Robert B. Anderson.

wishing you well, his majesty,
The Scandanavian Emperor

Jesse Helmes, Pat Robertson, John Anderson -- certainly unsettling candidates to say the least...

But the second one gave me something of an idea -- what about Billy Graham? He was remarkably popular, generally regarded as a good man, and many consider him one of the great Americans OTL -- but none of that would do anything to prepare him for the Presidency, where he could be easily maneuvered into going very far right...

Sort of like President Disney in another TL on the board... ;)

The problem with having Reagan appoint a far-right VP is that he has no need, he already has all the support of the religious right that he will ever need. A more plausible POD would be Bush as VP and him picking a far-right candidate, like Graham or Robertson, for VP. Bush gets shot, and the fun starts.
