AHC: Dutch South Africa

With a minimal-impact PoD of no earlier than 1750-1800ish, allow South Africa to remain a colony of the Netherlands without affecting much else of world history (meaning that important events outside of Southern Africa still happen). Bonus points if you list the effects of such an occurrence.

Hmm, would that include the Revolutionairy or Napoleonic wars? That does make it harder. Avoiding the French Revolution would easily mean a continued Dutch South Africa, even butterflies within the Revolutionairy war would mean the same, the British returned South Africa in 1803 to the Netherlands. after all. The British did that after Louis Napoleon Bonaparte became king of the Netherlands.

I think the best way would be to avoid Louis to become the Dutch king. Maybe Napoleon decides to annex the Netherlands completely, with the leaders of the Batavian Repblic fleeing to Britain, where they establish a Dutch government in exile (possibly together with the Dutch Stadholder in exile). BTW this would mean that western Guyana remains Dutch too.

Effects? Britain still wants a half-way station between Britain and India, so maybe they'll colonise Natal or Madagaskar. No Boer Trek, as that was a reaction to the British conquest of the Cape Colony or at least a smaller Boer Trek; leading to a smaller South Africa.

Britain had already been sniffing around Natal, especially with British settlement in Australia some kind of southern African way station is a matter of time. However I see no reason why Britain couldn't "live and let live" with a Dutch colony on the Cape. If the Cape does stay Dutch you might well have a bigger an less distinct Afrikaaner population today as continued Dutch migration both grows the population but also keeps them culturally closer to home. How big was Dutch migration to America during the 19th century and how much of that could be redirected to Africa?
