AHC: Draken and Viggen more popular

These two Swedish jets were very capable and advanced for the time and I have always wondered why they weren't more popular on the export market. Aside from the fact that Sweden was a neutral country they were good with customer support and were willing to customize their planes for your needs, like what they did with the Danish Drakens and turning them into strike aircraft. Who are some possible buyers other than OTL operators as I haven't heard of many countries evaluating them. Maybe the Luftwaffe could buy Drakens instead of the Starfighters or India could buy Viggens as proposed in OTL.

There is also the problem that both airceaft used engines from NATO countries that either forbade the export to some countries or complicated the issues as they competed against aircraft from the mentioned countries.

I can't recall the exact details but there is some story about Sweden refusing to supply Australia with replacement Carl Gustavs, or ammo for them or something when we were in Vietnam. The story is basically Swedish stuff is great so long as you don't actually use it.

If you replace Carl Gustav with Draken in that story then you have real problems. There's little point in fielding planes from a country that will embargo supply with little provocation.

France was the same way with spares on the Mirage III's, so we're not changing the fact that Australia's contribution to the Vietnam War will be minimal.

That's not what I meant. I meant that if the Drakken and Viggen sold more widely these customers would use them eventually and if Australia's experience with the Carl Gustav is anything to go by Sweden would embargo supply at the slightest provocation. Many countries actually expect to use their combat aircraft, avoiding situations where this is unable to happen is a major reason why major defence purchases are so political.
