AHC: Dominant Party system in America

How do we get a dominant party in the United States? By dominance, I mean like that of the LDP in Japan, or the ANC in South Africa. What POD might me needed for this? How long would it last? How might it end?

Kill off the GOP in the 1930s. There. You pretty much have it. Even if the Dems splinter, the New Deal Coalition is far stronger than the Progressives and the Dixiecrats.

You essentially had this in OTL between 1860 and 1932.

Indeed. You could further cement it by having the Democratic Party collapse due to the following:

1) The Continued existence of the Liberal Republican Party which has none of the electable viability of the Democrats of 1876 and will never be able to take on the Republicans even after the absorb the Democrats

2) Have Blaine Win in 1884 and 1888, cementing the failure of the Democrats by defeating the Bourbon Democrats twice and seeing the party split with defections to the Populists and Republicans.

3) Vitalize the National Democratic Ticket of 1896 by nominating Cleveland or Vilas as the nominee instead of Palmer, the split in the Democrats doesn't heal as Bryan reacts by dumping Sewell for Watson and the Democrats as a result shatter into 2 or 3 minor parties that will be out in the wilderness for at least 20+ years.

Not really, if you want to wreck the GOP 1952 is pretty much the year, Eisenhower refuses to run, Stevenson or another Democrat wins, the GOP was under such pressures between the Dewey vs Taft fight, as well as the last gasps of the Post-War Isolationists, all mixed in with McCarthy, you might very well see the Dewey/Rockefeller and Taft/Goldwater wings break in two.

In the 1930's the GOP, even on the ropes is still too unified to have things fall apart.

anyone else?

Have things go very well for the Republicans after the 1960s: Popular Democrats keep getting shot, the Democratic party breaking up and factionalizing as the traditional elements of the New Deal coalition can no longer stand one another with the divisive topics of the times, and have Nixon succeed in forming a big tent Conservative party. He was relatively successful at that as it was, because look at the Republican party as it is today. Take all those Dixiecrats and working class people and bring them into the Republican party totally alongside the traditional white collar and wealthy Republican base, and leave the Democratic party without strong leaders and constantly divided and have no one left in the Democratic party be able to stand one another so they leave and form independent factions.

Not only that but have his Welfare, Healthcare and Affirmative Action programs work as he intended and the Democrats in a few years won't even be able to play the identity politics card, or be able to find any common ground between the Old Guard and the New Left.
