AHC: Domestication of Zebra

In the modern 21st century, Zebra, as a whole, cannot be domesticated, (with the exception of a few one offs).
However, your challenge is to create POD within the last 2 millenia in which we have domesticated Zebra due to selective breeding, changes in condition or otherwise.
Bonus points if you have large scale domestication in which an African civilisation heavily utilises Zebra in the way which both European and Asian societies use the horse.
Extra extra bonus points if you could create a scenario in which an African major power utilises the zebra in the way the Mongols used the horse.

There has never been a domesticated Zebra, there have only been tamed Zebras

Also it doesn't matter how early you attempt to start the process of domestication, the underlying issues that make the zebra unlikely to be a domesticatable candidate will still be there.

This is ASB tbh, especially that last part.

Other than the odd one off attempt zebra domestication never got very far. They're just too wild. It isn't impossible to domesticate them, but it's going to take many generations of breeding to weed out some of the traits that are less desirable. And in that case, if you're breeding them for generations on end over a process of decades... you might as well just use horses.

The best chance of success would probably be a widowed European colonial in Africa with way too much money and time on his hands who does it for kicks and whose progeny continues the trend after he died.
