AHC: Democrats win 1972/1984

The 1972 and 1984 elections were landslides in the Republican's favor. McGovern and Mondale only got a single state and DC, Nixon and Reagan easily won re-election. But could somebody have unseated them? That's the challenge I'm posing. With a POD of November 1971 and November 1983 respectively, try and find a Democratic candidate who could have defeated Nixon and Reagan in the Election of 1972 and 1984 respectively. For fun, you could also have your take on what their theoretical term would be like

As for 1984, the boom time of the 1990s starts earlier and lasts longer.
The reputation of trickle down economics would be seriously weekend if not entirely discredited and America would be stronger for it.
American industry would be stronger and Reagan wouldn't be the conservative icon he is today.

In 1972 Hubert Humphrey could win against "Amnesty, Abortion and Acid" George McGovern and take his revenge: his anti-war rhetoric can hit on Cambodia Bombardments and, remembering Dicky tricks in 1968, he focuses immediately on Watergate Scandal and Agnew fiscal crimes. Bremer shoots to Humphrey but HHH survives and this boosts his popularity. With Vietnam War continuing although Nixon's promises, Humphrey could narrowly be elected.

In 1983 most people expected Reagan to be a one term President because of his 35% approvals the year before and the bad economy. It wasn't until Fed Chairman Paul Volcker - a Carter appointee - conquered inflation that Reagan's popularity began to rise in 1984. Perhaps if Reagan fires Volcker and replaces him with an incompetent and the economy doesn't improve then Reagan might lose. But IMO he is more likely to lose to Hart (this is pre-scandal) than Mondale who is tarred with the failures of Carter.
