AHC: Democratic President Trump

Have Donald Trump become the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party (preferably in a scenario where the Democratic Party has the same or similar ideology as IOTL) in any year and win the general election. The PoD can be at any point, although later ones would be more interesting.

Trump has changed his political affiliation and positions an number of times - his 2000 presidential campaign platform, which included universal healthcare, in particular was relatively liberal - and one of the few issues that he's been consistent on is opposition to free trade, which has traditionally been a Democratic stance. However, for as long as he's been a public figure, he's been dogged with allegations of sexism, racism, and unethical business practices, things that wouldn't exactly help you in a Democratic Primary.

In this scenario, he would probably need to gain some political experience (I don't see the Democrats as being that willing to nominate a businessperson who had never held political office; having him be a Democratic Governor of New York would certainly boost his credentials) and you would also need to find a way for the Democrats to be in a situation where they would nominate a centrist populist and ignore Trump's past controversies.

This is too close to actual politics, should be in chat.

I read a couple of weeks back, that someone remaining anonymous from the Hillary campaign claimed that Trump could have won both the primary and the election as a democrat in 2016; without any further changes...

I considered that, but I thought that it wouldn't be necessary since it doesn't directly relate to current events and would require a PoD at least a decade back. Though, if a mod disagrees, I have no problem with it being moved to chat.

I'm very doubtful that he would have had any chance in OTL 2016 Democratic Primaries. By then, he was very much associated with Republican politics, and birtherism in particular.

He'd have immensely different policies, suffice to say. The America We Deserve would essentially be his platform.

Avoiding President Obama in 2008 (to avoid the Birther thing) and having the Democrat elected in that year lose to some Republican candidate in 2012 could be enough to have Democratic Trump.

Have Obama be a Republican president and Trump takes issues with his conservative health care policies :p

I forgot something: Trump stayed a democrat and did switch parties in 2009.

As I said, not my idea, but somehow interesting, a Trump, Clinton, Sanders primary...
