AHC: Defeat Reagan in 1984

Harder than the 1980 one, but anyways

Challenge: With Ronald Wilson Reagan as the Republican presidential nominee in 1984, have another party's candidate defeat him.

Did Iran-Contra have happaned yet(some people mention 1983, even early because the thing of american in lebanon) if yes... maybe some mole giving the true of iran-contra and destroying the aura of reagan will be enough....

Unless you inflicted a major POD that would most likely require handwaving or ASB, then you can't do any better than Mondale - maybe electorally if the candidate's from another state, but it'd still be a forty-nine state sweep for Reagan.

Even a poor debate performance would still assure him a blowout

I can see a case being made for Reagan being unbeatable without a major POD, but I think that a better candidate than Mondale, or a poorer performance than Reagan, could win more then one state.

Have someone more dovish, i.e. less dedicated to fighting inflation, than Paul Volcker as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. (He was appointed by Carter in August 1979, but I don't see butterflies altering the 1980 election, given that monetary policy generally takes a long time to work.) The economic malaise of the 1970s continues and, with no Morning in America, Reagan is roundly trounced by Mondale or anyone other credible Democrat in 1984.

As an alternative, could intervention in Lebanon have gone even worse than OTL?

I made the awful mistake of probing this board while in a sour mood earlier. You're completely correct - it's actually quite possible, I think, for Reagan to be defeated in 1984, even by Mondale, if the butterflies are lined up correctly.
