AHC: Davidic Byzantine Dynasty

Both the Solomonid Dynasty of Ethiopia and the Bagrationi Dnynasty of Georgia claim descent from King David.

Your challenge is to have a dynasty with similar claims on the Byzantine throne.

Minus 1 point if you just get the Bagrationis on the throne.

Plus 100 points if you get the Solomonids on the throne.

Charlemagne marries Irene of Athens. Done. The Frankish Kings all claim Davidic descent.

The possibilities thenceforth are endless. Have a Bagration marry a king of Armenia Minor, then have the latter's daughter or son marry a Frankish lord somehow related to the Capetians.

Or, the Eastern Schism never occurs and a French princess marries into the House of Palaiologos. Or, the Crusades never fail and one of the royal houses of the Levant or Armenia or the Latin Empire of Constantinople, namely the houses of Lusignan and Courtenay, somehow eventually marry with the pertinent imperial house.

Technically, the ruler of the ERE IS of Davidic lineage. His name is Jesus by the way and all the emperors claim that they are merely the viceregent of Christ on earth.

If you could centralize the power in Ethiopia and get a merger going with Makuria pre-islamic shift you have the possibility for a very powerful coptic state south of egypt, giving you as a byzantine emperor plenty of motivation for a marriage alliance with Ethiopia to smack down the Abbasids with a two front war while they are still consolidating their power.

this scenario would pop a Solomonid descendant on the Throne.

Well. If the Empire does a little better and lasts longer, or things go differently in the tenth and eleventh centuries, perhaps a hellenized Bagrationi in the Empire seizes the throne?

More seriously though,to get a Bagrationi on the throne could be as simple as this:a member of the Bagrationi Dynasty serves in the East Roman Army, rises to high rank, overthrows emperor in military coup/revolt.Becomes emperor. There were a lot of Armenians in the army afterall,so as long as the Bagrationi general is reasonable competent, there's always an opening for him to the throne.

Wow, is there evidence of this claim being made outside of 'Holy Blood, Holy Grail'?

All of the official family trees of European Royalty tend to cite descent from David, Noah, and Adam. Partly to apply the promises given to David by God to themselves, partly for the prestige of claiming relation to Jesus Christ. It's no different from the House of Wessex claiming descent from Woden.

Maybe I'm being dumb here, but would this really be so hard? I mean have a new Dynasty come to power and claim decent from King David. They could rather easily make up a lineage. Or have a Royal marriage with the Georgians and Ethiopians.

Apparently Empress Maria of Alania was a Bagration. Her son Constantine Doukas was a co-emperor.

And Maria of Antioch and her son Alexios were descended from the Carolingians, who claimed Davidic descent.

So simple.I can't believe we've been overthinking things all the time.

Of course, there's a distinct difference between being of the House of David (as the Bagrationids and Solomonids claimed), and merely claiming descen from King David (which almost everyone can honestly claim).

The Bagrationid claim is as good as everyone else, meaning it was BS to begin with.Quite obvious that there claim was fake.

As for the Solomonid claim,no one really knows.

The only ones who can validly claim to be part of the House of David are the Exilarchs.

That would be an interesting scenario. A converted member of the Exlarch's family becomes Emperor.
